Here are my top five things to do and visit in Istanbul, in no special order. I selected these not because they are famous, but because I think they are worth experiencing and seeing. Hence, for example, I didn’t include the famous Blue Mosque, but I suggested something different. I also wanted to draw attention to many other things to do and see in Istanbul that is worth it. So enjoy this list and make the most out of your trip.

Topkapi Palace

Topkapi Palace is a proper name on this list, and you just can’t afford to miss it while you are in Istanbul. This building of pavilions and kiosks contained by four lush green courtyards is where the generation of sultans had their main residence for almost half a century. Top attractions in the Topkapi Palace is the Harem of Sultan where he kept his most beautiful women, the Treasury for storing the most valued jewels and the famous Topkapi dagger.

Getting Scrubbed In A Hamam

There is nothing more relaxing than getting your body scrubbed in a hammam. The whole experience of wearing nothing but just a cotton cloth and relaxing in a steamy room laying in hot marble, listening to the echoes of running, then getting a quick body scrub, followed by a sultan’s massage until your skin is soft and smooth.

Museum Of Turkish And Islamic Arts

The Museum of Turkish And Islamic Arts is far more exciting than its name. It is located in the former palace of Ibrahim Pasha – the most magnificent Grand Vizier of Sultan Suleyman – and overlooking the Hippodrome; the collection has more than 40,000 items on display. Each room covers a different period of the Islamic world and reflects on the daily Turkish life from the 8th to 19th century.

Grand Bazaar

Grand Bazaar is one of the oldest and largest bazaars in the world, and while visiting Istanbul, it’s a must to visit this place. It has around 60 streets that contain 5000 shops, 18 fountains, 60 restaurants, 12 mosques and even a school. This is not a tourist trap as the locals shop here every day, but odds are they’re quite good at bargaining as compared to you. The bazaar is quite famous for its leather, ceramics, jewellery and carpets.

Visit Local Markets

Turkey’s cuisine is the richest and finest amongst all, blending flavours of different cultures and continents. All these dishes are made with fresh ingredients, stuff you can buy yourself from the local markets of Istanbul. These local markets do look overwhelming but are assured that you will receive a warm welcome by stallholders.

Traveling to Turkey for spending some quality time with family or oneself, is probably the best holiday plan you can ever make. Holidays to Istanbul will be the most exciting experience of your life.
